The Early Years of Manouchehr Shamshiri on the Mat

The Early Years on the Mat

A promising provincial wrestler with a bright future.

Before his legendary careers in track and field and volleyball, Manouchehr Shamshiri spent several years competing in provincial wrestling. He was exceptionally talented and showed immense promise as a future champion on the mat.

His wrestling years were not just a pastime — they were the foundation of his athletic identity. The discipline, strength, and endurance he built during this period would later shape his incredible career in other sports. The mat taught him resilience, and the experiences he gained there remained with him for life.

Yet, the course of his athletic life would soon take an unexpected turn — one that would alter the destiny of Iranian sports forever.

A Turning Point: The Unjust Competition

In the 1960s, a provincial wrestling competition would change everything.

During a provincial wrestling competition in the 1960s (the 1340s in the Iranian calendar), Manouchehr Shamshiri faced an injustice that stripped him of his rightful victory. This moment of unfairness marked a turning point in his athletic journey.

It was during this difficult period that his wrestling coach suggested something unexpected. The city had no one to run in the 100-meter sprint event, so he was asked to represent them on the track — despite having no formal track and field experience.

Without knowing how naturally gifted a runner he truly was, he stepped onto the track alongside experienced sprinters — wearing his wrestling singlet and wrestling shoes.

The 100-Meter Sprint

An accidental entry that revealed a hidden talent.

To everyone's surprise — perhaps even his own — Manouchehr Shamshiri crossed the finish line in first place. His natural speed and raw athletic power, developed through years on the wrestling mat, allowed him to outpace his competitors from the very first stride.

This unexpected victory opened a new door. He realized that he might not only be talented in wrestling, but perhaps even more gifted in track and field — a discipline he had never truly explored.

With a heavy heart, he decided to close his wrestling chapter. Carrying with him the valuable experiences, strength, and discipline he had gained on the mat, he began to pursue track and field seriously — a path that would eventually lead him to the Asian Championships and the World Military Games.
