Building a dominant volleyball legacy in Khorasan.
Manouchehr Shamshiri was a renowned volleyball expert and strength coach in Khorasan during the 1970s and 1980s. He had a remarkable ability to discover and nurture talent, mentoring future stars such as Hassan Shamshiri, Bagher Soleimannezhad, and Jamal Ghochannejhad (the father of national footballer Reza Ghochannejhad).
Under his undisputed leadership, he transformed teams from small towns into champions. He repeatedly put the city of Birjand on the map at both provincial and national levels — in track and field, and especially in volleyball. His teams were so cohesive and powerful that many of his students, who started from zero, became shining sports stars, often training and competing in multiple disciplines simultaneously.
In the 1980s, Shamshiri led the Birjand volleyball team to win the Khorasan Provincial Championship. They defeated every major city along the way — including Mashhad, Neyshabur, Bojnord, and Quchan — with a historic victory over the powerful Mashhad volleyball team, which had previously held national titles. In his golden coaching era, Birjand was so competitive that they could have surprised the biggest volleyball giants in the country.
In the list of Asian champions nurtured by Shamshiri, Bagher Soleimannezhad and Jamal Ghochannejhad are proudly named in volleyball. His impact on the sport was so profound that his students excelled not only locally, but also on the continental stage.
The glorious era of Birjand volleyball came to an end when Shamshiri left the city, retired, and eventually migrated to Mashhad. The national first-place title in volleyball was never repeated for Birjand after his departure — not even after Birjand was promoted to the status of provincial capital. This remains a lasting testament to the unmatched influence of Manouchehr Shamshiri.

Building strength, discipline, and champions on the mat.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Manouchehr Shamshiri discovered and trained legendary figures like Reza Sokhtesaraei and Feylabi for the first time at the 04 Birjand Garrison. He possessed a sharp eye for identifying athletic talent from the ground up. When young conscripts arrived for their military service, Shamshiri would guide them toward sports, nurturing them for the national stage.
He often recalled discovering Sokhtesaraei upon his arrival at the garrison, noting that they couldn't even find suitable clothes or boots to fit him. Recognizing his natural potential for wrestling, Shamshiri invited him to the mat and immediately began training. It wasn't long before he suggested that Sokhtesaraei enter national competitions.
Drawing upon his extensive background in foundational and strength sports — such as track and field, mountaineering, and of course, wrestling — Shamshiri trained his students to be as immovable as mountains against their rivals. At the 1974 Asian Games, he was part of the track and field team, while his two prodigies, Feylabi and Sokhtesaraei, competed in wrestling. Both wrestlers went on to win gold and silver medals, cementing Shamshiri's legacy as a legendary talent-maker.
Discovered at the 04 Birjand Garrison by Shamshiri, Reza Sokhtesaraei transformed from an unknown conscript into a wrestling powerhouse. Under Shamshiri's guidance, he quickly rose through the ranks of national competitions, eventually standing on the podium at the 1974 Asian Games.
Another extraordinary talent identified by Shamshiri during the same era, Feylabi was molded into a world-class wrestler. His success alongside Sokhtesaraei at the 1974 Asian Games stands as a testament to Shamshiri's unmatched ability to build champions from the ground up.
