Manouchehr Shamshiri's Professional Track and Field Career

The Beginning of a Track Career

How a Wrestler Became a Sprinting Champion

In the 1960s (the 1340s in the Iranian calendar), after being unfairly treated in a provincial wrestling competition, he accidentally entered a 100-meter sprint at the suggestion of his wrestling coach.

With no prior experience in track and field, and still wearing his wrestling singlet and shoes, he competed in the provincial athletics championships.

In his very first track and field appearance, his natural talent and remarkable advantage over his competitors earned him first place and a gold medal.

This success led him to leave wrestling behind and pursue track and field seriously.

Manouchehr Shamshiri: A Rising Star in Iranian Track and Field

A translated excerpt from a newspaper clipping describing the early days of Manouchehr Shamshiri's rise in track and field reads as follows:

A Collector of Records!

Blessed with exceptional physical attributes, natural talent, and remarkable power, Manouchehr Shamshiri must be recognized as a rising new figure who is rapidly on his way to greatness in Iranian track and field.

Only a short time has passed since he stepped away from wrestling and chose track and field as his new path. Yet even within this brief period of dedicated training, his astonishing progress clearly points to a bright and promising future. One cannot help but think that had he entered this discipline from the very beginning, he would already be shining as one of the major stars of Iranian athletics. Instead, after many years of hard work on the wrestling mat, he has only recently embarked on this new journey.

In the remote city of Birjand, the name Manouchehr Shamshiri is already a familiar and respected one. His physique is a rare asset, radiating immense strength and raw athletic potential. Standing 1.90 meters tall and weighing 76 kilograms, his well-balanced and powerful build is a living testament to the years of discipline and effort he invested in wrestling.

Shamshiri delivered outstanding performances in the recent Imperial Armed Forces competitions. In the 110-meter hurdles, competing alongside Bahram Miri, the national record holder and one of Iran's most prominent track and field figures, he claimed the championship with a time of 16 seconds. He also secured first place in the 400-meter hurdles. Remarkably, on the very next day during a time trial, he lowered his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles to 15.8 seconds, breaking his own record from the previous day.

Manouchehr Shamshiri won first place in the 100-meter race in Tabriz with a record of 11.4 seconds at a track and field competition in the 1960s.

Manouchehr Shamshiri represented Iran as a member of the national track and field team at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran.

Despite his personal preference, he was assigned by the coaching staff to compete in the decathlon.

In four of the decathlon's running events, he achieved first to third place finishes.

However, since several other decathlon disciplines — such as the shot put, javelin, hammer throw, high jump, and triple jump — did not align with his athletic specialization, he ultimately secured third place in Asia in the decathlon.
